What to expect from laminectomy for spinal stenosis

Spinal stenosis narrows the space available for nerves, often causing back or leg pain, heaviness, tingling, or weakness during standing and walking. A laminectomy removes part of the lamina to enlarge that space; other nearby tissue may also be treated if it contributes to compression.

Leg pain and walking tolerance may improve before back discomfort. Nerves can remain sensitive for a while, and numbness or weakness may recover gradually. Laminectomy does not remove every cause of back pain, so your surgeon will explain the expected target of the operation.

Walk little and often, change position carefully, and keep the wound dry as instructed. Avoid bending, twisting, and lifting beyond the limits provided by your team. Physiotherapy can teach posture, transfers, walking progression, and exercises for trunk and leg control.

Arrange transport home and help with tasks during the first part of recovery. Do not drive or return to strenuous work until your surgeon confirms that pain, mobility, and medication effects allow it.

Seek prompt care for new leg weakness, numbness around the saddle area, difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain that is rapidly worsening. Fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, calf swelling, chest pain, or breathing difficulty also needs urgent assessment.

Ask which nerves are being decompressed, whether fusion is being considered, what walking distance is appropriate at first, and which symptoms mean the spinal canal needs urgent review.
