What to expect from kyphoplasty for a vertebral compression fracture

After imaging identifies the affected vertebra, the procedure is performed with anaesthesia or sedation selected by the treating team. A narrow instrument reaches the vertebra through the back, and a balloon may create a cavity before cement is placed. The aim is to stabilise the fracture and address pain linked to that vertebra; it does not treat every cause of back pain or underlying bone weakness.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, and other health conditions, and follow instructions about eating and drinking. Arrange safe transport and help if advised. Afterward, follow restrictions on lifting and bending, keep the puncture area clean, and increase walking only as directed. A plan to assess bone health may reduce the chance of further fractures.

Contact the treating team for increasing back pain, fever, drainage, or redness at the access site. Seek urgent care for new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or difficulty walking. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Ask which vertebra is being treated, what anaesthesia is planned, and what pain improvement is realistic. Clarify medication instructions, bathing and activity limits, follow-up imaging, and how osteoporosis or another bone condition will be managed.
