What to expect from knee arthroscopy for plica syndrome

A camera lets the surgeon examine the joint and the irritated fold of lining called a plica. If it is contributing to rubbing or pain, the surgeon may remove or smooth the troublesome tissue through small openings. The decision depends on the examination and other findings inside the knee; arthroscopy is not a promise that every source of pain will disappear.

Early recovery can include soreness, stiffness, bruising, and fluid around the knee. Many people work on bending and straightening soon after surgery, but your instructions depend on what was found and treated. Quadriceps weakness can make stairs and rising from a chair difficult at first.

Prepare a clear path at home and arrange a lift after the procedure. Use dressings, walking aids, pain medicine, and cold therapy exactly as instructed. Keep wounds protected and do not soak them until the surgical team says it is safe.

Complete the prescribed exercises without forcing a swollen joint. Walking is usually increased in stages, while kneeling, deep bending, and impact activity wait until control returns. Tell the physiotherapist which movements cause catching or rubbing so the programme can be adjusted.

Seek prompt advice for worsening redness, pus-like drainage, fever, severe pain, or swelling that does not respond to the advised measures. Get urgent help for calf swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, or for a foot that becomes cold, pale, or numb.

Ask what the surgeon expects to find, whether tissue will be removed or smoothed, how much walking is allowed, and which symptoms should trigger a call.
