What to expect from knee arthroscopy for a meniscus tear

During arthroscopy, the surgeon views the inside of the knee through a small camera and uses instruments through other small openings. Depending on the tear’s position, tissue quality, symptoms, and activity goals, the surgeon may smooth unstable tissue or repair it with stitches. These choices lead to different weight-bearing and exercise instructions.

Afterward, the knee may feel stiff, swollen, or bruised. A repair can require more protection while the tissue heals; trimming may allow earlier movement. The operation does not automatically restore strength, balance, or confidence, so physiotherapy remains part of recovery.

Before surgery, arrange transport, a safe route at home, and any crutches or support your team recommends. Follow instructions about medicines, eating, and bathing. Afterward, use only the amount of weight and knee bending allowed by your surgeon. Elevation, prescribed pain relief, and cold packs with a protective layer may help early swelling.

Attend follow-up visits and progress exercises gradually. Do not return to twisting sports, deep squats, or driving until your clinician confirms that movement, strength, and control are adequate. Report pain that is worsening rather than settling, rather than trying to train through it.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or swelling that is rapidly worsening. Seek urgent care for new calf pain or swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness. A cold, pale, numb foot or inability to move it also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether your tear is being repaired or trimmed, when you may bear weight, which exercises are allowed first, and when driving or sport can be reconsidered.
