What to Expect from Joint Fusion Surgery for Hand Osteoarthritis

The surgeon removes damaged joint surfaces, positions the bones, and holds them together with fixation such as screws, pins or a plate. The fused joint will no longer bend, so the aim is a steadier, less painful joint rather than preserved motion at that location. Nearby joints can still provide movement for gripping and everyday tasks.

A splint or cast usually protects the hand while the bones heal. Stiffness, swelling and tenderness are expected early on, and the final result depends on the joint treated, bone healing and the condition of the rest of the hand.

Before surgery, review medicines, smoking or nicotine use, skin problems and any health issue that could affect healing. Arrange help with dressing, cooking and personal tasks because the operated hand may be protected at first.

Keep the dressing and splint dry, elevate the hand, and move only the fingers or joints your surgical team permits. Attend follow-up visits and hand therapy. Do not lift, lean on, or force the fused area until healing has been checked. Therapy can work on safe movement around the fusion, swelling control and gradual return to useful activities.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, drainage, fever, a dressing that becomes soaked, or a splint that feels dangerously tight. Seek urgent help if the fingers become cold, blue, numb or increasingly difficult to move, or if severe swelling develops suddenly.
