What to expect from joint aspiration for septic arthritis

Septic arthritis is an infection inside a joint and can damage joint tissues if treatment is delayed. A clinician cleans the skin and uses a needle to remove fluid from the painful, swollen joint. The sample may be examined for infection and sent for laboratory testing to help select treatment. Blood tests or imaging may also be used. Aspiration is an investigation and may not be the only treatment; antibiotics and drainage decisions depend on the clinical assessment.

Because suspected septic arthritis needs prompt assessment, tell the team about fever, recent procedures, wounds, injections, immune problems, allergies, and medicines. Do not postpone evaluation because you are worried about the needle. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines if a further procedure is being considered. After aspiration, keep the site covered as directed and limit activity according to the treating team. Take prescribed antimicrobial treatment exactly as instructed if it is started.

A hot, swollen, very painful joint with fever or chills warrants urgent medical assessment, particularly when movement is difficult. After aspiration, seek urgent help for worsening pain or swelling, spreading redness, drainage, confusion, faintness, or a new high temperature. Do not wait for fluid results if your general condition is deteriorating; the team may need to act while tests are pending.
