What to expect from joint aspiration for knee bursitis

The clinician examines the front or side of the knee and cleans the skin. Local anaesthetic may reduce needle discomfort. Fluid is withdrawn from the bursa, which sits between the skin and structures around the kneecap, and a sample may be sent for testing. Aspiration can relieve fullness and improve bending, but repeated kneeling, friction, injury, or infection can keep the bursa inflamed.

Mention blood thinners, allergies, diabetes, immune problems, fever, and cuts or rashes near the knee. Follow instructions about regular medicines. Keep the dressing clean, avoid kneeling and direct pressure, and pause high-impact exercise while tenderness settles. Use a cushion or knee protection when advised for work or hobbies, then rebuild activity gradually.

Call promptly if redness spreads, warmth increases, drainage appears, or pain becomes more severe. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell after aspiration may signal an infected bursa and needs assessment. Seek urgent care for sudden inability to move the knee, major swelling after an injury, or a foot that becomes numb, pale, or cold.

Ask whether the swelling is in the prepatellar bursa, whether fluid testing is needed, how long to avoid kneeling, what protective equipment may help, and what treatment is appropriate if the swelling returns.
