What to expect from joint aspiration for gout

During a painful, swollen flare, gout and infection can look similar. After cleaning the skin, a clinician may numb the area and guide a needle into the joint. The fluid is examined for urate crystals and signs of infection. This can clarify the diagnosis and guide treatment; aspiration itself is not a complete long-term plan for preventing future flares. The joint may feel less tense after fluid is removed.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, diabetes, immune conditions, fever, and antibiotics you are taking. Do not stop regular treatment unless instructed. Keep the dressing in place as directed, rest the joint briefly, and avoid strenuous loading while it is sore. Take prescribed gout treatment or pain relief according to the plan, and ask when normal activity can resume.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever, chills, rapidly increasing redness or warmth, pus, or severe pain after aspiration. These features can indicate infection, which needs quick assessment even when gout is already known. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting, or a sudden cold or numb limb.

Ask when the fluid results will be available, how infection will be excluded, which medicines are safe with your other prescriptions, how to manage the current flare, and what will lower the chance of another attack.
