What to expect from joint aspiration for bursitis

The clinician identifies the swollen bursa, cleans the skin, and may use local anaesthetic. A fine needle removes some or all of the collected fluid. The sample can help distinguish inflammation from infection or another cause of swelling. Depending on the location, ultrasound may help guide the needle. Aspiration treats the fluid build-up, while the trigger for bursitis may need separate care.

Before the appointment, mention blood thinners, allergies, immune problems, diabetes, fever, and any break in the skin near the swelling. Do not alter prescribed medicines without instructions. Keep the small dressing dry as advised. Rest the area from pressure and repetitive loading, then return to normal movement gradually. Use only the pain relief recommended for you.

Some tenderness at the needle site can occur. Call the clinic if pain, swelling, redness, or warmth increases, or if fluid leaks from the site. Fever, chills, pus, or feeling unwell needs prompt assessment because an infected bursa requires medical treatment. Sudden severe pain or loss of function also warrants urgent advice.

Ask which bursa is involved, whether fluid testing is needed, how long to avoid pressure on it, which activity may have caused irritation, and what plan will reduce the chance of another flare.
