What to expect from IVF for unexplained infertility

Unexplained infertility means standard assessments have not identified why conception has not occurred. IVF brings more of the reproductive process into view: medicines encourage several eggs to mature, and a clinic tracks response with scans and blood tests. Eggs are collected during a short procedure, then combined with sperm in the laboratory. An embryo may later be placed in the uterus. The treatment plan can change according to ovarian response, embryo development and your medical history.

Your clinic will explain medication timing, appointments, consent and how to give a sperm sample if needed. Keep a written medicine schedule and report troublesome side effects promptly. Arrange support for the egg-collection day, because sedation or anaesthesia can affect driving and decision-making. After transfer, follow the clinic's instructions about medicines and activity; ordinary gentle movement is usually easier to manage than strict bed rest.

Contact your fertility team promptly for severe or worsening abdominal pain, marked swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, heavy bleeding, fever or repeated vomiting during treatment. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for the planned appointment. After transfer, urgent pain or bleeding also deserves direct advice, especially if you feel unwell.

Ask which stimulation protocol is planned, how monitoring will work, what happens if too many or too few eggs develop, whether embryo transfer will be fresh or later, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call.
