What to expect from IV fluid therapy for sepsis

Sepsis is a serious response to infection that can affect circulation and organs. A cannula allows prescribed fluid to enter a vein while staff check blood pressure, pulse, breathing, oxygen level, temperature, alertness and urine output. Blood tests, cultures and scans may help locate the infection. Fluids are only one part of care; treatment may also include antibiotics, oxygen, source control or medicines to support blood pressure, depending on the assessment.

Tell the team about allergies, medicines, pregnancy, heart or kidney disease, recent infections and any change in urine. Report chest tightness, breathlessness, new swelling, pain or leaking around the cannula. Do not leave urgent care because you feel briefly better. If you are with someone who may have sepsis, provide the symptom timeline and medication list if available while responders assess them.

Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or mottled skin, a rapidly worsening condition, inability to stay awake, very little urine or severe weakness with signs of infection. Sepsis can worsen quickly. A fever is not required, and an older adult or person with reduced immunity may show less typical symptoms.

Ask what infection is suspected, which tests are being done, how your circulation and urine output are being followed, what medicines are planned, and what changes would require higher-level monitoring.
