What to expect from IV fluid therapy for heat stroke

Heat stroke can impair the brain and other organs, so it requires emergency treatment rather than home rehydration. Staff may place one or more cannulas, give prescribed fluids, begin active cooling and repeatedly check temperature, blood pressure, pulse, breathing and alertness. Blood and urine tests may help assess organ stress. The fluid plan depends on your circulation, medical history and response; more fluid is not automatically safer.

If heat stroke is suspected, call emergency services immediately and move the person to shade or a cool area. Remove excess clothing and cool the skin with water and airflow while help is coming. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused, vomiting, having a seizure or unable to swallow safely. Tell responders about medicines, illnesses, exposure to heat and when symptoms began.

Confusion, collapse, seizure, loss of consciousness, very hot skin, severe breathing difficulty or abnormal behaviour after heat exposure are emergency signs. Do not wait to see whether IV fluids are needed. A person who briefly improves still needs medical assessment because heat-related organ injury may not be obvious at first.

Once the emergency team has stabilised you, ask which organs are being monitored, what tests are planned, how long observation may last, which medicines to avoid, and when activity can restart.
