What to expect from IV fluid therapy for gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis can cause vomiting, loose stools, cramps and fluid loss. If you cannot drink enough, a clinician may insert a cannula into your hand or arm and give fluid slowly from a bag. They may assess your pulse, blood pressure, temperature, alertness and urine output. The infusion supports hydration while the underlying illness runs its course; it is not a substitute for finding another cause when symptoms are unusually severe or prolonged.

Share details of your symptoms, medicines, pregnancy status and kidney or heart conditions before treatment. Tell staff promptly if the cannula site becomes painful, swollen, cold or wet. After nausea improves, try small sips of oral rehydration solution if recommended, rather than drinking a large amount quickly. Wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others while unwell, and return gradually to ordinary meals.

Obtain urgent help for confusion, collapse, severe dizziness, very little urine, blood in stool or vomit, intense abdominal pain, breathing trouble or repeated vomiting that prevents drinking. A baby, older person or someone with a chronic illness may become dehydrated quickly and needs a lower threshold for assessment. Contact a clinician if symptoms worsen or fail to improve after the infusion.

Ask how dehydration is being judged, when you may restart oral fluids, whether you need testing, what medicines are suitable, and which changes require immediate review.
