What to expect from IV fluid therapy for food poisoning

Food poisoning may cause repeated vomiting or diarrhoea, making oral rehydration difficult. A clinician places a small cannula into a vein, usually in the hand or arm, and connects it to a fluid bag. The solution enters gradually. Staff may check your pulse, blood pressure, temperature, urine output and mental alertness, then adjust the plan. IV fluids support hydration; they do not remove the infection or replace assessment for complications.

Tell the clinician about kidney, heart or liver problems, pregnancy, regular medicines and any allergy. Keep the arm still enough for the cannula to remain comfortable, and report burning, swelling, redness, leaking or increasing pain near the insertion site. When vomiting settles, take small frequent sips of an oral rehydration drink if advised. Resume light foods as tolerated and follow instructions about rest and hygiene to reduce spread.

Seek urgent medical care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Reduced urination, a very dry mouth or worsening dizziness can signal significant dehydration. Further assessment may be needed if symptoms continue after fluids or if a child, older adult or person with a long-term illness is affected.

Ask what caused the dehydration, which fluid is being used, how your urine and vital signs will be followed, when you can drink normally, and which symptoms should bring you back for review.
