What to expect from IUI for unexplained infertility

Unexplained infertility is used when standard assessments have not identified a clear reason for difficulty conceiving. Those assessments may include ovulation review, semen analysis, examination of the uterus, and checks of the fallopian tubes. A normal result does not show that conception will happen in a particular cycle; it means the available tests have not found a specific explanation.

IUI may be offered because it places prepared sperm inside the uterus close to ovulation. The cycle can be natural or supported by ovulation medicine. Ultrasound monitoring may show follicle growth, while a hormone test or trigger medicine can help coordinate timing. Your clinician will explain the balance between treatment intensity, monitoring, and the possibility of multiple pregnancy.

Attend scans and blood tests as scheduled, record any medicines and symptoms, and follow instructions for an ovulation trigger if prescribed. The laboratory prepares the sperm sample before the insemination. During the procedure, a thin catheter passes through the cervix into the uterus; brief cramping or light spotting may occur. Continue prescribed medicines and wait for the clinic's chosen pregnancy-test date rather than testing too early.

Contact the fertility team if pain is significant or increasing, bleeding is heavy, you develop fever or unusual discharge, or you feel generally unwell. After ovulation medicine, report marked abdominal swelling, severe pain, vomiting, or breathlessness without delay. Go to emergency care for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or sudden severe pain.

Ask which tests support the unexplained infertility assessment, whether natural or medicated IUI is planned, how ovulation will be timed, what monitoring is needed, what would cause the cycle to be cancelled, and when you would review the plan if pregnancy does not occur.
