What to expect from IUI for female infertility

Female infertility can have several possible contributors, including ovulation, the fallopian tubes, the uterus, age-related fertility changes, or factors that remain unclear. Before IUI, the clinic may review your history, confirm ovulation timing, assess the uterus and tubes, and discuss the sperm sample. IUI places prepared sperm inside the uterus around ovulation, shortening the distance sperm must travel.

A cycle may use your natural ovulation or medicine to encourage the development of an egg. Ultrasound scans and hormone tests can help identify the fertile window. If more than one follicle develops, the team will explain whether the cycle should continue, be changed, or be paused because of the chance of a multiple pregnancy.

Take medicines at the prescribed times and attend monitoring appointments, because the insemination date depends on follicle development and ovulation. Follow instructions about an ovulation trigger if one is prescribed. The sperm sample is washed in the laboratory before the procedure. During IUI, a speculum is used and a thin catheter passes through the cervix; mild cramping or light spotting can follow. Continue medicines exactly as instructed and test on the date provided.

Call the clinic if you have significant pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, unusual discharge, or feel unwell after IUI. If ovulation medicines were used, report increasing abdominal swelling, severe pain, vomiting, breathlessness, or a rapid change in weight, as these can signal ovarian overstimulation. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, collapse, or sudden intense pain.

Ask what testing has been completed before IUI, whether your cycle will be natural or medicated, how many follicles are acceptable, what happens if ovulation occurs early, which symptoms need a same-day call, and when to take a pregnancy test. Discuss the plan if this cycle does not lead to pregnancy.
