What to expect from steroid injection for a skin cyst

After examining the lump, the clinician may place corticosteroid into the inflamed skin around or within a suitable cyst. The aim is to calm inflammation and make the area less swollen or tender. A cyst can still have a capsule beneath the skin, so injection is different from a procedure that removes the cyst wall.

Expect brief pinching or pressure and possible short-lived soreness. Local effects can include skin thinning or a lighter patch. If the lump is infected, very painful, repeatedly returning, or uncertain in diagnosis, the clinician may recommend another approach instead of relying on an injection.

Keep the site clean, avoid squeezing it, and follow instructions about dressings or washing. Tell the clinician about allergies, earlier cyst treatments, skin infections, and medicines. Do not apply harsh acids or unapproved creams to the injection site while it is irritated.

Monitor size, tenderness, warmth, drainage, and skin colour. Arrange follow-up if the lump persists or returns, because the next step may involve observation, drainage, or removal after inflammation has settled. A steroid injection alone does not provide a diagnosis for every lump.

Contact the clinic if pain, warmth, redness, swelling, or drainage increases. Seek prompt review for fever, a rapidly enlarging lump, spreading redness, or a wound that does not settle. Facial swelling, eye-area swelling, or breathing difficulty requires urgent care.
