What to expect from steroid injection for cystic acne

The clinician cleans the skin and places a small amount of corticosteroid into the selected deep, inflamed spot. The purpose is to calm inflammation within that lesion. It is not the same as injecting every blemish, and it does not treat blocked pores or acne-prone skin across the face or body.

There may be brief stinging, pressure, or mild soreness. As the inflammation settles, the lump may feel less tense. Local steroid effects can include thinning or a lighter patch, so the amount and placement are chosen carefully, particularly on visible skin.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, piercing, or scrubbing it. Use only the products recommended for your skin, and continue prescribed acne prevention unless the clinician tells you to pause. Tell the clinician about prior reactions, active skin infection, and medicines before another injection is considered.

Watch the treated lesion and note whether pain, redness, and swelling are changing. A single injection may calm one flare while other lesions still need acne treatment. Ask for a longer-term plan if deep or painful lesions keep returning.

Contact the clinic if the site becomes more painful, hot, swollen, or begins draining. Report a persistent indentation, marked thinning, or noticeable colour change. Urgent assessment is needed for rapidly spreading facial redness, major swelling near the eye, fever, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the lesion is suitable for injection, what improvement to expect, how to prevent new deep lesions, and which topical or other treatments should continue. Clarify how long to wait before considering another review.
