What to expect from steroid injection for skin sarcoidosis

A clinician examines the lesions and injects corticosteroid into chosen areas of affected skin. The treatment is local, so it is generally used for lesions that can be reached directly; it does not replace assessment of sarcoidosis elsewhere in the body. The plan depends on lesion thickness, location, symptoms, and whether the diagnosis has been confirmed.

You may notice short-lived stinging, pressure, redness, or swelling. A treated area can later become thinner or lighter, especially when medication reaches skin beyond the intended target. Improvement is assessed during review rather than assumed from immediate changes.

Tell the clinician about medicines, allergies, previous steroid injections, skin infections, and any sarcoidosis symptoms being managed by another team. Do not squeeze, scratch, or cover the area with an unapproved product after treatment. Follow the clinic’s instructions for cleansing and protection.

Observe the lesion’s tenderness, colour, thickness, and surface. Keep appointments so the clinician can decide whether to observe, repeat, change, or stop local treatment. Mention new lesions or symptoms elsewhere because a skin injection is only one part of sarcoidosis care.

Contact the clinic if the treated area becomes increasingly hot, painful, swollen, or begins to drain. Report a persistent open sore, pronounced skin depression, or strong colour change. Fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment.

Ask why particular lesions were selected, how the response will be measured, whether other organs need review, and which local changes should prompt a call. Confirm how this injection fits with any systemic sarcoidosis treatment.
