Short answer

Expect treatment visits with blood tests and symptom reviews, along with a plan that may change according to response and side effects.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Visit may include
Symptom review, examination, and blood tests
Extra support
Nutrition and hydration advice when needed
Call promptly
Vomiting, diarrhoea, jaundice, bleeding, or breathlessness

Understanding the treatment

Immunotherapy helps the immune system identify and attack cancer cells. For stomach cancer, it may be used with other medicines or in a later treatment setting when test results and the wider clinical picture support it. Your oncology team will consider the cancer’s extent, previous treatment, nutrition, other illnesses, and how well you are coping physically.

Treatment is often delivered through a vein. Each visit may include a symptom review, examination, blood tests, and sometimes a scan at a later appointment. Tiredness, appetite change, nausea, diarrhoea, rash, cough, or joint aches can occur. Inflammation caused by immune activity may affect the bowel, liver, lungs, hormone glands, kidneys, or skin.

Preparing for each cycle

Tell your team about vomiting, loose stools, abdominal pain, poor appetite, trouble swallowing, weight change, fever, or reduced urine. These symptoms can affect hydration and nutrition, which are especially relevant when stomach cancer or previous treatment has changed eating patterns.

Bring your medicine list and mention supplements before starting anything new. Keep blood-test and scan appointments, note when symptoms begin, and ask for dietitian support if meals are becoming difficult. Small, frequent meals or prescribed nutrition support may be useful for some people, but follow advice tailored to you.

Symptoms to report quickly

Contact your cancer team promptly for persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, black or bloody stools, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, a new widespread rash, cough, breathlessness, severe headache, confusion, or a major change in thirst or urination.

Get urgent help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, vomiting that prevents fluids, sudden confusion, or heavy bleeding. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are escalating.

Questions to discuss

Ask what test results support immunotherapy, whether it will be combined with chemotherapy or another medicine, how scans will be interpreted, and how nutrition and symptom control will be supported. Clarify the number to call when the clinic is closed.

Questions people ask

Does immunotherapy replace all other stomach cancer treatment?

Not necessarily. It may be combined with or follow other treatment, depending on test results, cancer extent, previous care, and your health.

Why are blood tests needed before treatment?

They help the team check your general health and look for changes that could affect whether treatment should proceed or be adjusted.
