What to expect from immunotherapy for liver cancer

Immunotherapy helps the immune system recognise cancer cells and mount a response. Your team considers the type and extent of liver cancer, liver function, previous treatments, other illnesses and medicines when creating a plan. Treatment may be given alone or with another cancer medicine. Appointments can include an examination, blood tests and an infusion, followed by reviews that combine symptoms, liver results and scans.

Tell your team about alcohol use, prescribed medicines, painkillers, supplements, herbal products and any history of hepatitis or liver disease. Report appetite changes, nausea, abdominal discomfort, itching, rash, diarrhoea, swelling, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness or confusion. Do not change medicines or begin a supplement without clinical advice. Follow the team’s guidance about food, fluids and activity, and arrange help if fatigue affects daily tasks.

Contact your oncology service promptly for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual bleeding, increasing abdominal swelling, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, marked sleepiness, confusion, a spreading rash, new cough or breathlessness. Seek urgent care for severe confusion, fainting, vomiting that prevents fluids, severe breathing difficulty or facial swelling. Prompt assessment can identify liver inflammation or another problem and guide the next treatment decision.

Ask how liver function will be checked, whether your existing liver condition changes the plan, which medicines and supplements to avoid, and how scans will be interpreted. Ask which symptoms need a same-day call, whether another treatment is combined with immunotherapy, and how to reach the service outside normal hours.
