What to expect from hysterectomy for endometriosis

Endometriosis involves tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus. A hysterectomy removes the uterus and stops menstrual bleeding, but it is not a guaranteed cure for endometriosis-related pain because disease may affect the ovaries, bowel, bladder, or pelvic lining.

Your surgeon may discuss removing visible endometriosis during the same operation. The cervix, tubes, and ovaries are considered separately. Removing both ovaries can bring on surgical menopause, while retaining them may allow hormone production to continue. Pregnancy is not possible after the uterus is removed.

Bring a complete medicine list and describe bowel, bladder, sexual, and pain symptoms. Ask whether imaging, bowel preparation, or another specialist is needed. Make arrangements for transport and practical help, and follow the hospital’s fasting and medicine instructions.

Recovery may include fatigue, pelvic soreness, constipation, and light bleeding or discharge. Gentle walking supports movement, while lifting, strenuous activity, and vaginal intercourse wait until healing is confirmed. Keep follow-up appointments so persistent pain, wound healing, and hormone symptoms can be reviewed.

Call the surgical team for increasing pelvic pain, fever, heavy bleeding, offensive discharge, repeated vomiting, wound changes, or difficulty urinating or opening your bowels. Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, or a suddenly painful swollen leg.

Ask which endometriosis areas may be treated, whether a bowel or bladder specialist could be involved, which organs will remain, how menopause will be managed, and what plan exists if pain continues after recovery.
