The procedure may be open or minimally invasive, but cervical cancer sometimes requires a wider operation.

After surgery, you may have a catheter, wound dressings, and temporary discomfort or tiredness. Removing the womb means you cannot become pregnant, and removal of the ovaries can bring menopause symptoms. Your team will discuss sexual wellbeing, fertility, and whether other treatment such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy is advised.

Before the operation, share your medicines, allergies, previous surgery, smoking status, and any concerns about fertility or sex. Arrange help with meals, transport, and heavier tasks. During recovery, follow wound-care instructions, walk gently as advised, and avoid lifting or vaginal sex until your surgeon confirms healing.

Attend follow-up visits so the surgical findings can be reviewed and the next care plan agreed. Ask when you can return to work, drive, exercise, and use tampons or other vaginal products.

Contact your surgical team for increasing wound redness, discharge, pain that is not controlled, feverishness, heavy vaginal bleeding, difficulty passing urine, or a swollen painful leg. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, or sudden confusion.
