What to expect from hyaluronic acid injection for osteoarthritis

Hyaluronic acid is placed inside an osteoarthritic joint, commonly the knee, to supplement the joint fluid and help movement feel smoother. A clinician cleans the skin, may numb the area, and guides a needle into the joint. The visit is usually short, although preparation and observation take extra time. The injection does not rebuild worn cartilage or correct every cause of pain, so your clinician will explain what improvement is realistic for your joint and stage of symptoms.

Mild tenderness, fullness or stiffness can occur around the injection site. Relief, if it occurs, may be gradual rather than immediate. Tell the clinician about allergies, skin infection, fever, bleeding problems, blood-thinning medicines and previous injections. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the joint. Afterward, follow the advised period of lighter activity; avoid strenuous loading until you are told it is appropriate, while gentle movement may be encouraged. Keep the area clean and track pain, swelling, walking ability and sleep. Arrange follow-up if improvement is unclear or symptoms continue to limit daily tasks.

Contact the treating service promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, severe pain or difficulty moving the joint after the injection. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fainting or other signs of a serious allergic reaction. New calf swelling or chest symptoms also need urgent assessment. Do not wait for a routine follow-up when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
