What to expect from hormone therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer

A receptor-positive result means the cancer cells have proteins that respond to particular hormones. Depending on whether you have gone through menopause and your other treatments, your team may recommend a tablet that blocks oestrogen action, lowers oestrogen production, or changes ovarian hormone activity. The medicine can be used after surgery, alongside other treatment, or when cancer needs long-term control.

Hot flushes, sweating, vaginal dryness, reduced sexual desire, joint stiffness, muscle aches, tiredness and mood changes are possible. Symptoms can be gradual, so mention them early rather than waiting until they disrupt sleep or movement.

Take doses consistently and use a reminder if helpful. Tell your oncology team about bone problems, high cholesterol, blood-clot history, menstrual changes, contraception or pregnancy plans, and all medicines or supplements. Gentle movement, sleep support and treatment for vaginal or joint symptoms may help, but check proposed remedies first. Continue breast examinations and planned imaging.

Call your team about persistent pain, troubling mood changes, new vaginal bleeding, or side effects that make ordinary tasks difficult. Obtain urgent care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, or a swollen painful leg. A new breast change also deserves clinical assessment, even while you are taking treatment.

Ask which receptor result supports treatment, what your medicine does, how long it is planned, and how benefit will be assessed. Discuss bone protection, menstrual or sexual symptoms, contraception, interactions, and what can be tried if the first medicine causes difficult effects.
