What treatment may involve

HRT may contain oestrogen alone or oestrogen with a progestogen. If you have a womb, progestogen is generally used to protect its lining. Treatment can be taken as tablets or delivered through the skin; local vaginal products are used mainly for dryness and discomfort.

Symptoms may improve gradually rather than immediately. Breast tenderness, bloating, headaches or spotting can occur during adjustment. Bleeding after menopause should be discussed, particularly if it persists or starts after a settled period.

Using HRT safely

Give the prescriber your history of clots, stroke, liver disease, migraine, breast or womb problems, and all medicines. Use the prescribed dose and attend reviews so benefits, side effects and the need for treatment can be reassessed. Ask about non-hormonal options if HRT is unsuitable.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling, or sudden weakness or speech trouble. Contact your clinician promptly for unexpected vaginal bleeding, a new breast change, severe headache or jaundice.
