What to expect from HIFU treatment for photoaging

Photoaging can leave skin with fine lines, uneven texture, laxity, and changes in tone. HIFU directs ultrasound energy into selected deeper layers to encourage a wound-healing response and collagen remodelling. It does not remove every sign of sun exposure, and it is not a substitute for daily sun protection or treatment of suspicious spots.

During treatment, you may feel brief heat, pressure, prickling, or small electric-like sensations as the device delivers pulses. The treated area may look mildly flushed and feel sensitive afterward. Visible firming develops gradually as the skin responds, so your clinician may discuss when an assessment of the result is useful.

Tell the clinician about recent tanning, active irritation, cold sores, implanted devices, medicines, and previous cosmetic procedures. Arrive with clean skin and follow any instructions about products that can increase irritation. Afterward, use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen; avoid picking or vigorously rubbing tender areas until they settle.

Plan around a period when mild redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness would be manageable. Keep follow-up appointments so the clinician can check the response and decide whether further care is appropriate for your skin condition.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is severe or worsening, swelling continues to increase, the skin blisters, an open area develops, or you notice new weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving part of the face. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, facial swelling involving the mouth or throat, or other signs of a serious allergic reaction.
