What to expect from a hearing test for Meniere's disease

The assessment measures the softest tones you can detect across different pitches and how clearly you understand speech. Meniere's disease can cause hearing that fluctuates, often with tinnitus or a feeling of fullness in one ear, so the pattern and change over time matter. A hearing test cannot confirm the condition on its own. The clinician combines it with your episodes, ear examination, and other assessments when needed.

Describe when hearing changes, whether one ear is affected, and whether fullness or ringing rises during dizzy episodes. Mention ear infections, noise exposure, medicines, and previous hearing tests. Respond whenever you hear a tone, even if it is faint, and ask for a pause if dizziness or discomfort develops. Keep follow-up appointments so changes can be compared with earlier results.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden hearing loss, new facial weakness, severe headache, difficulty speaking, fainting, or dizziness with new neurological symptoms. Prompt care is also appropriate for severe continuous vertigo with repeated vomiting or inability to walk safely. Do not assume a sudden change is simply another Meniere's episode.

Ask what your hearing pattern shows, whether both ears should be monitored, and when another test is useful. Discuss whether you need balance assessment, hearing support, or a plan for symptoms that begin suddenly.
