What to expect from a hearing test for earwax buildup

The clinician may look into the ear canal for wax, swelling, or another blockage before interpreting the hearing results. During the test, you usually respond when you hear tones through headphones or a small device, and may repeat words at different listening levels. Earwax can reduce the sound reaching the eardrum, so the result may not represent your usual hearing until the blockage is addressed. The assessment can also indicate whether further ear review is needed.

Tell the clinician about hearing changes, ear pain, discharge, ringing, dizziness, previous ear surgery, or a known eardrum problem. Do not put cotton buds or other objects into the canal. If wax removal is advised, follow the recommended method and return for reassessment if hearing remains reduced. Hearing protection may be sensible around loud sound while symptoms are being assessed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, blood or fluid from the ear, new facial weakness, or intense spinning dizziness. These symptoms are not safely explained by wax alone. Seek help sooner if an ear becomes painful after attempted cleaning or if fever develops.

Ask whether wax is blocking the canal, whether the hearing test should happen before or after removal, and what type of removal is appropriate. Clarify whether both ears need testing and when to return if hearing does not improve.
