What to expect from hand therapy for hand osteoarthritis

Short answer
Expect a personalised hand assessment, gentle exercises, practical joint protection advice and a plan that builds useful hand function over time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How hand therapy helps
Your therapist checks which finger, thumb or wrist movements are limited and how symptoms affect gripping, pinching, writing, dressing or kitchen tasks. Treatment may use warmth, movement practice, strengthening within tolerance, and techniques to reduce strain on painful joints. A custom or ready-made splint may support a thumb or finger during selected activities or rest. Therapy cannot reverse joint changes, but it can help you use the hand more efficiently and protect movement.
Making the plan work at home
You may be shown short exercises to repeat regularly, with instructions to stop or modify a movement that causes sharp or lasting pain. Spread demanding tasks through the day, use larger handles when possible, and avoid holding a tight grip longer than needed. Bring questions about work, hobbies and household tasks so the programme reflects real life. Progress is reviewed and exercises can be adjusted as comfort, strength or dexterity changes.
When to seek further care
Contact your clinician promptly for a suddenly hot, very swollen or red joint, a new injury with loss of function, marked numbness, or pain that is rapidly worsening. Seek urgent help for a hand that becomes pale, blue or unusually cold. A therapist or doctor can reassess persistent symptoms and check whether another problem is contributing.
Questions to ask
Ask which joints should be protected, whether a splint suits your activities, how to recognise overdoing exercises, and when your plan should be reviewed.
