What to expect from a growth scan for placenta praevia

You usually lie back or slightly tilted while gel is placed on your abdomen and a probe creates images. Measurements can include the baby's head, abdomen, and thigh bone, along with heartbeat and movement. The sonographer also assesses amniotic fluid and where the placenta lies in relation to the cervix. A low placenta may move farther from the cervix as the uterus grows, but the scan helps your maternity team decide whether another check is needed.

Wear clothing that allows easy access to your abdomen and follow any instructions about having a comfortably full bladder. Bring your pregnancy notes and ask when the report will be discussed. Keep the follow-up appointment even if you feel well, because placenta location and fetal growth are assessed together. Your clinician can explain activity advice, birth planning, and whether a later scan is appropriate.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for any vaginal bleeding, especially bright-red or heavy bleeding, or for contractions, tightening, or pain. Seek urgent help if bleeding is accompanied by dizziness, faintness, or reduced fetal movement. Do not wait for the scheduled scan when these symptoms occur; use the emergency pathway recommended by your maternity team.

Ask how close the placenta is to the cervix, whether the baby's growth matches the pregnancy stage, and whether the baby's position changes the plan. You can also ask when the next scan is due, which symptoms require immediate contact, and how delivery planning will be handled if the placenta remains low.
