What to expect from a growth scan for oligohydramnios

Oligohydramnios means there is less amniotic fluid than expected. During the scan, the sonographer uses ultrasound measurements of fluid spaces, checks the baby's kidneys and bladder when visible, and measures growth. Doppler may assess blood flow through the umbilical cord or other vessels.

Low fluid can have different explanations, including leaking fluid, placental concerns or changes late in pregnancy. The scan cannot answer every cause on its own. Your clinician combines the fluid assessment with your dates, blood pressure, fetal movements, examination and any tests for leaking fluid.

Attend the review even if you feel well, because fluid findings can change over time. Follow instructions about hydration, activity, medicines and repeat scans. Pay attention to your baby's usual movements and keep your maternity contact details available. Your team may arrange closer ultrasound or heart-rate monitoring, or discuss birth planning.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if you notice a gush or continued leaking of fluid, reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, painful regular contractions, fever or severe abdominal pain. These symptoms need assessment rather than waiting for a repeat ultrasound.

Ask how fluid was assessed, whether growth and blood flow are reassuring, whether leaking fluid needs investigation, and when monitoring should be repeated. Clarify which movement changes require immediate contact and how the findings may affect the timing and place of birth.
