What to expect from a growth scan for twin and multiple pregnancy

The sonographer records measurements for each baby, including the head, abdomen and thigh bone, and checks each heartbeat, position and fluid pocket. Labels or positions are recorded carefully so the same baby can be followed at later visits. Doppler ultrasound may assess blood flow when the team needs more information.

Twins or triplets can grow at different rates, and the placenta arrangement affects how they are monitored. A difference between measurements does not by itself show a problem. Your specialist interprets the pattern, fluid, blood flow and symptoms together, often using repeat scans to see change.

Wear clothing that allows access to your abdomen and allow extra time because several babies need separate measurements. Bring your notes and ask how each baby is identified in the report. Keep every scheduled scan and follow advice about rest, medicines, nutrition and fetal movements. The team may add heart-rate monitoring or other appointments.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or vision changes. With multiple pregnancy, do not wait for a planned scan if you feel something has changed; ask the maternity team where to be assessed.

Ask whether each baby is growing as expected, whether fluid and Doppler findings are reassuring, how the placentas affect surveillance, and when the next scan is planned. Discuss warning signs, the likely monitoring pathway, and how findings could influence the timing or mode of birth.
