What to expect from a growth scan for gestational diabetes

A sonographer moves an ultrasound probe over your abdomen and measures the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone. The scan estimates growth and checks amniotic fluid, position and movement. Depending on your care plan, blood flow or other wellbeing checks may also be discussed.

Gestational diabetes can be associated with a baby measuring larger than expected, but scan measurements are estimates rather than a direct prediction of birth weight. The result is considered with your glucose readings, fundal-height checks, blood pressure and the wider pregnancy picture.

A growth scan generally needs no special preparation. Bring your questions and pregnancy records, and continue the glucose-monitoring, meal and medicine plan given by your team unless they tell you otherwise. Ask how the result changes follow-up. Some people need repeat growth assessment or additional monitoring; the schedule is individual.

Call your maternity unit urgently for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe headache or vision changes. Seek prompt medical advice for very high glucose readings with vomiting, dehydration or feeling unwell, following the sick-day instructions provided for your diabetes plan.

Ask whether your baby's growth and fluid are within the expected pattern, when the next scan or monitoring visit is due, and how glucose control affects the plan. Clarify medication instructions, movement concerns, and how scan findings may influence discussions about induction or caesarean birth.
