What to expect from a GP consultation for tension headache

Short answer
A GP consultation for tension headache reviews the pain pattern, triggers and medicines, checks your nervous system, and identifies symptoms needing urgent assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Neurological examination, blood pressure and vision
- Track
- Frequency, duration, triggers and associated symptoms
What the GP will assess
Describe where the pain is, whether it feels pressing or tight, how long episodes last, and how often they occur. Mention neck or jaw tension, screen use, sleep changes, stress, dehydration, skipped meals and any nausea or light sensitivity. A headache diary can make this pattern easier to recognise.
The GP may check blood pressure, vision, eye movements, speech, strength, sensation, coordination and the neck. The history and examination help separate a tension-type pattern from migraine, medication-overuse headache or a less common but urgent cause. Tests are considered when the pattern or examination suggests they are needed.
Making the consultation useful
Bring a list of every pain medicine and how often you take it, including over-the-counter products. Note recent injuries, pregnancy, new medicines and other health conditions. The plan may include regular meals, fluids, sleep routines, posture or screen breaks, neck relaxation and a safe medicine strategy. Follow-up is useful if headaches become more frequent or change character.
When to seek urgent help
Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, a new headache after head injury, or a major change in vision. These signs require urgent assessment rather than waiting for routine headache advice.
Questions to ask
Ask what headache pattern fits your symptoms, how often pain medicine is safe for you, which lifestyle changes are most relevant, whether you need an eye or neck assessment, and when to return if the pattern changes.

Questions people ask
Will I need a scan for a tension headache?
Not always. The GP uses your history and examination to decide whether imaging or another assessment is appropriate.
Can frequent painkillers worsen headaches?
Regular use of some pain medicines can contribute to medication-overuse headache, so discuss the product and frequency with your GP before increasing doses.
