How the ear is assessed

The GP may ask about swimming, recent ear cleaning, earbuds, itching, pain when the outer ear is moved, discharge, blocked hearing and fever. Using an otoscope, they look for swelling, debris, irritation and whether the eardrum can be seen. They may also check the glands around the ear and compare hearing.

Swimmer's ear affects the ear canal, but a blocked canal can make examination difficult. The treatment choice can depend on the canal's appearance, the eardrum and whether there are signs of infection beyond the canal. Do not put cotton buds or unprescribed drops into the ear.

Preparing for treatment

Tell the GP about allergies, ear surgery, tubes, hearing devices and any drops already used. Keep water out of the ear while it heals and avoid swimming until advised otherwise. If drops are prescribed, use the full instructions and ask someone to help place them if swelling makes this difficult. Report worsening pain or new hearing changes.

When to seek urgent care

Get prompt medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, marked dizziness, sudden hearing loss, or symptoms in someone with diabetes or a weakened immune system. These features may need faster assessment than a routine consultation.
