What to expect from a GP consultation for rubella

The GP may ask when the rash started, where it appeared first, whether it spread, and whether you have fever, sore joints, swollen glands or eye symptoms. They may examine the rash and feel glands around the neck. Tell them about vaccination, recent contact with someone unwell, travel and any possibility of pregnancy. Rubella can resemble other rashes, so the clinical appearance may not be enough; the GP may arrange blood or other testing and discuss public-health notification according to local practice.

Phone ahead before attending if rubella is possible, so the clinic can reduce exposure to other patients. Avoid close contact with pregnant people until a clinician gives specific advice, and do not share towels or cups. Note the rash onset and bring vaccination information. Treatment is generally supportive, but your GP can advise about fluids, rest and suitable symptom relief.

Seek urgent advice for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe headache, dehydration, rapidly worsening illness or a very unwell child. Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant or could be pregnant and have a new rash or possible rubella exposure, because fetal health needs specific assessment.

Ask whether testing is needed, how long to avoid close contact, how pregnancy contacts should be protected, and when normal school, work or social activities can resume.
