Short answer

A GP consultation for restless legs syndrome usually covers the sensation pattern, sleep impact, medicines, examination and blood tests when appropriate.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What your GP may explore

Describe the urge to move, crawling or pulling sensations, which parts of the legs are affected, and whether symptoms become worse during rest or later in the day. Explain whether walking or stretching brings relief and how sleep, concentration or mood are affected. Your GP may ask about pregnancy, kidney problems, family history, iron deficiency and medicines that can worsen symptoms. A physical examination can look for nerve, muscle or circulation problems. Blood tests may be suggested to check iron stores or another contributor.

How to prepare

Keep a short record of when symptoms appear, what eases them and how often sleep is interrupted. Bring every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement, including products used for allergies or nausea. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. The plan may include addressing an underlying issue, reviewing medicines, improving sleep habits or discussing treatment if symptoms remain disruptive.

When to seek earlier help

Arrange prompt medical advice if leg discomfort is sudden, one-sided, swollen, hot or painful, especially with breathlessness or chest pain. Those features can point to a different urgent problem rather than restless legs syndrome. Seek help sooner if sleep loss is making you unsafe to drive, work or care for yourself.

Questions worth asking

Ask whether iron or another health problem could be contributing, whether any current medicine may aggravate symptoms, and how to judge whether a proposed treatment is helping.

Questions people ask

Will the GP need a scan to assess restless legs syndrome?

Diagnosis is usually based on the symptom pattern and history; a scan is not routinely needed, though other tests may be considered for different concerns.

Should you bring a medicine list?

Yes. Include prescriptions, supplements and non-prescription products because some can affect symptoms or treatment choices.
