Short answer

A GP consultation for postural hypotension usually includes a careful symptom history, blood-pressure checks in different positions, a medication review, and advice to prevent falls.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the GP may investigate

Tell the GP whether dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, nausea or faintness occurs after standing, how quickly it starts and how long it lasts. Mention falls, heat, meals, exercise, illness and fluid intake. The GP may measure your blood pressure and pulse while you are resting and again after you stand, while watching for symptoms. They may review medicines for blood pressure, the heart, sleep or mood, because some can contribute. Depending on your history, further checks may look for anaemia, dehydration, heart rhythm problems or nerve-related causes.

Before and after the visit

Record episodes, posture, timing, food and drink, and any home readings if you have a validated monitor. Bring every medicine and supplement or a clear list, and describe any recent dose change. Until assessed, rise slowly, sit at the bedside before walking, keep pathways clear and hold a stable support if needed. Ask whether fluid or salt changes are suitable for you; do not alter prescribed treatment without advice. The GP may recommend review, compression measures, exercises or treatment of an underlying cause.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help after a faint with injury, chest pain, severe breathlessness, a fast or irregular heartbeat, new weakness, trouble speaking, severe headache or confusion. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot stand safely, have ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea, or show signs of serious dehydration. Sit or lie down immediately when symptoms begin and call for help if you might fall.

Questions to ask

Ask which medicines or conditions may contribute, whether you need blood tests or heart checks, what blood-pressure readings matter, and how to reduce fall risk at home.

Questions people ask

Should I stop my blood-pressure medicine?

No. Discuss possible medicine effects with the GP, who can decide whether a dose or treatment change is appropriate.

What if I feel faint during the appointment?

Tell the clinician immediately, sit or lie down, and avoid walking until the symptoms have passed and you are supported.
