What to expect from a GP consultation for mpox

The GP may ask when the rash began, where it appeared, whether lesions changed from spots to blisters or scabs, and whether there is fever, swollen glands, sore throat, rectal pain, or mouth or eye involvement. They may ask about close skin-to-skin contact, household exposure, sexual contact, travel, and contact with animals. A careful skin and general examination helps compare mpox with other infections and conditions.

The practice may request a remote discussion first. If testing is needed, a clinician explains how a lesion sample is collected and how to protect staff and other patients during the visit.

Phone ahead and describe the rash rather than arriving unannounced. Avoid close physical contact, sharing towels or bedding, and touching or picking lesions while awaiting advice. Cover lesions with clothing or a dressing if instructed, wash hands often, and keep a note of symptom onset and recent close contacts. Tell the GP about pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines because these can affect the care plan.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, severe dehydration, uncontrolled pain, a rapidly worsening illness, or lesions involving the eye. Seek prompt clinical advice for severe rectal pain, inability to pass urine or stool, or extensive mouth lesions that prevent drinking. Mention possible mpox before entering an emergency department.
