What to expect from a GP consultation for measles

Measles commonly presents with fever, cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes, and a spreading rash. Tell the practice before attending because measles can spread readily; the team may arrange a separate route or telephone assessment. The GP may ask when symptoms began, where the rash started, recent contacts, travel, and vaccination history.

Assessment may include looking at the rash, checking temperature and breathing, and reviewing hydration and general appearance. Testing or public-health advice may be arranged according to local guidance and the clinical picture. The consultation also considers complications such as ear infection, pneumonia, or dehydration.

Phone ahead rather than waiting in a crowded reception area. Avoid close contact with babies, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity until a clinician advises that it is safe. Rest, take fluids, and use only medicines suitable for you; keep a record of fever, fluid intake, breathing changes, and new symptoms. Follow isolation and testing instructions carefully.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, blue lips, or a child who is difficult to wake. Get prompt advice for persistent high fever, worsening cough, ear pain, eye pain, or reduced drinking. Tell emergency services that measles is suspected before arrival.
