Short answer

Expect questions about symptoms and health, an examination when appropriate, and carefully timed blood tests before treatment decisions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the consultation may cover

The GP may ask about reduced sexual desire, erection changes, fertility plans, low energy, mood, muscle strength, sleep, and changes in body hair. These symptoms have several possible causes, including poor sleep, stress, weight changes, medicines, thyroid problems, diabetes, and other illnesses. Symptoms alone do not establish testosterone deficiency.

The doctor may review testicular or breast symptoms, body changes, medicines, and relevant medical history. Testosterone varies during the day, so testing is usually planned for a suitable morning time and may need repeating if a result is low. Further tests can help distinguish a problem with hormone production from a signal-control problem.

How to prepare and what happens next

Write down symptom onset, sleep quality, exercise, alcohol use, fertility goals, and all medicines or supplements. Ask whether fasting or a particular appointment time is needed for blood tests. Do not start testosterone from an online source. If deficiency is confirmed, the GP may discuss treating an underlying cause, referral, monitoring, or options that fit your fertility plans.

When to seek urgent care

Low testosterone itself is not usually an emergency. Seek urgent help for sudden severe headache, vision loss, confusion, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a painful swollen testicle. Arrange prompt medical review for a new breast lump, unexplained testicular change, or rapidly worsening weakness.

Questions to ask your doctor

Which tests are appropriate and when should they be taken? Could another condition or medicine explain these symptoms? How would treatment affect fertility, and what monitoring would be needed?

Questions people ask

Can one blood test confirm low testosterone?

A single result may not be enough; the GP considers symptoms, timing, repeat results, and related hormone tests together.

Does treatment always mean testosterone replacement?

No. The plan may address sleep, medicines, weight, another illness, or referral, depending on the assessment and fertility goals.
