What to Expect from a GP Consultation for Gout

The GP may ask when the pain began, which joint is affected, how quickly swelling developed, and whether similar attacks happened before. They may examine warmth, tenderness, redness, and movement. Other causes of a swollen joint can resemble gout, so the assessment may include blood tests, imaging, or fluid testing from the joint when appropriate. Bring a list of medicines and mention kidney problems, stomach ulcers, allergies, and recent illness.

Write down your symptoms, recent foods or alcohol if they seem relevant, and any medicines taken for the attack. Follow the prescribed plan exactly and do not start or stop long-term urate-lowering medicine without advice.
