What to expect from a GP consultation for goitre

Your GP may ask when the swelling appeared and whether it is changing. They may ask about weight change, heat or cold intolerance, tremor, palpitations, bowel changes, tiredness and difficulty swallowing. During the examination, the GP may feel the thyroid while you swallow and check nearby neck structures. They may also listen to your heart and assess whether the swelling affects breathing or voice. These findings help guide the next tests.

Bring a medicine list and mention thyroid problems in your family, previous neck treatment and any recent imaging. Blood tests can assess thyroid function. Depending on the examination and results, your GP may arrange an ultrasound or refer you for specialist assessment. Do not press or massage the swelling repeatedly. Keep a note of changes in size, swallowing, breathing or voice so you can describe them clearly.

Get urgent help if the swelling causes sudden breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, severe chest or neck pressure, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange prompt medical review for a quickly enlarging lump, new persistent hoarseness or unexplained palpitations. These features need assessment even if the swelling is not painful.

Ask which thyroid tests are appropriate, whether an ultrasound is needed, what symptoms suggest overactive or underactive thyroid function, and when the swelling should be reviewed.
