What to expect from a GP consultation for gallstones

Your GP may ask where the pain is, whether it follows meals, how long episodes last, and whether you have nausea, vomiting, fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes. They may feel your abdomen and check for tenderness. Depending on your symptoms, the GP may arrange blood tests to look for inflammation or changes affecting the liver, and an ultrasound scan to look for gallstones. Similar pain can have other causes, so the consultation is also about checking those possibilities.

Before the appointment, note when symptoms began, how often they return, foods or drinks that seem to trigger them, and any medicines you use. Bring details of previous scans or operations if available. Your GP may discuss pain relief, eating patterns that reduce symptoms, and referral for further assessment if stones are causing repeated or troublesome episodes. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or persistent upper-abdominal pain, pain with fever or repeated vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, confusion, or marked weakness. These symptoms can signal inflammation, infection or blockage and need prompt assessment rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
