What to expect from a GP consultation for a foreign body in the eye

The GP may ask what entered the eye, when it happened and whether it involved metal, glass, chemicals or high-speed activity. They may check vision, redness, watering, eye movements and the eyelids, sometimes using drops or a light to inspect the surface. A foreign body can cause a surface scratch, and an object that is embedded or hard to see may need specialist equipment.

Do not rub, press or try to remove an object that appears stuck. Rinse with clean water when a loose particle is suspected, unless a clinician has given different advice, and remove contact lenses. Bring protective eyewear if relevant and describe any treatment already tried. After assessment, use prescribed drops as directed and avoid contact lenses until the eye has recovered or a clinician says they are suitable.

Seek urgent eye care for reduced vision, severe pain, strong light sensitivity, chemical exposure, bleeding, an object embedded in the eye, or an injury caused by high-speed particles. Do not delay after a chemical splash: rinse continuously while arranging emergency help.

Ask whether the surface is scratched, whether anything remains in the eye, how to use drops, when vision should improve, and which symptoms require immediate reassessment.
