What to expect from a GP consultation for dry eye

Your GP may ask when burning, grittiness, watering, redness or blurred vision began, whether screens, air conditioning or contact lenses make it worse, and which products you have tried. They may check the eyelids, surrounding skin and the visible eye, while considering medicines, allergies and conditions that can affect tear production or the eye surface.

Bring a list of medicines, eye drops and contact-lens products, and describe how often you use them. Follow the recommended lubrication or eyelid-care routine exactly as directed. Taking breaks from close screen work, avoiding smoke and protecting the eyes from moving air may reduce irritation. A GP may arrange further eye assessment if symptoms persist, the cause is unclear or the examination needs specialist equipment.

Seek urgent medical advice for severe eye pain, a marked change in vision, strong light sensitivity, significant injury or a very red eye with worsening symptoms. Do not continue wearing contact lenses while the eye is painful or red until a clinician has advised you.

Ask what may be irritating the eye, how to use any recommended drops, whether contact lenses should be paused, and what changes would mean you need an eye specialist.
