How the structures involved in Concussion differ from normal

Short answer

During a GP consultation for concussion, expect questions about the head injury and symptom changes, a neurological examination, safety advice, activity guidance and a plan for follow-up.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Describe
Mechanism of injury, memory gap, loss of consciousness and symptoms
Check
Alertness, memory, pupils, movement, balance and coordination
Safety plan
Supervision, gradual activity and clear emergency warning signs

What the assessment covers

Explain when and how your head was hit, whether you lost consciousness, and what you remember before and after the event. Mention headache, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, blurred vision, poor concentration, unusual irritability, sleep changes and balance problems. The GP may check alertness, speech, memory, pupils, eye movements, strength, sensation, coordination and walking. A scan is not required for every concussion; it may be arranged when the injury or examination raises concern for bleeding or another complication.

What to do before and after the visit

If possible, have another adult describe changes they noticed and help you remember instructions. Bring a list of medicines, especially blood thinners, and report any previous head injuries. Ask when you can return gradually to school, work, driving, exercise or contact sport. Early recovery usually involves relative rest followed by a careful increase in activity that does not significantly worsen symptoms. Avoid alcohol and further head impacts until a clinician says they are safe, and keep the follow-up appointment if symptoms continue.

When to seek emergency care

Call emergency services for worsening or severe headache, repeated vomiting, increasing drowsiness, confusion, seizure, weakness, numbness, slurred speech, unequal pupils, loss of consciousness or clear fluid or blood from the nose or ears. Urgent assessment is also needed after a significant injury if you take blood-thinning medicine. Do not stay alone if symptoms are worsening or you cannot be monitored safely.

Questions to ask

What symptoms should I monitor? Do I need a scan or follow-up? When can I drive or work? How should I return to exercise? Which changes mean emergency care?

Questions people ask

Does every concussion need a brain scan?

No. The examination and injury details guide the decision, and imaging is arranged when there are features suggesting a more serious injury.

Can you return to sport when the headache improves?

Return should be gradual and guided by symptoms and clinical advice. Avoid activities with a risk of another head impact until cleared.
