What to expect from genetic counselling for Lynch syndrome

A counsellor may ask about cancers, polyp findings, ages at diagnosis, and patterns on both sides of your family. Bring information about relatives if you have it, but incomplete details do not prevent a useful conversation. The counsellor explains how Lynch syndrome can be inherited and why a result may affect screening or treatment discussions.

Testing may examine genes involved in repairing DNA. A positive result can support a plan for closer monitoring and may be relevant to relatives. A negative result or a result whose meaning is uncertain may need careful explanation; it does not automatically answer every family-risk question.

Before the visit, write down your own diagnoses, biopsy or tumour findings, and any cancer diagnoses known in close relatives. Make a list of medicines and questions about privacy, consent, and who will receive the result. Ask how the sample will be collected and when results are expected.

After testing, review the report with the counselling or oncology team rather than interpreting a gene name alone. Ask whether the result changes bowel, womb, ovarian, urinary-tract, or other surveillance discussions, and whether relatives should be offered counselling.

Genetic counselling is planned care, but contact your clinical team promptly if you develop blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, new abdominal pain, or unusual bleeding. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether genetic testing has been arranged.

Ask: What in my personal or family history raises the question of Lynch syndrome? Which test is being offered, and what could each type of result mean? How will the result affect my screening plan? Should my relatives seek counselling? Who will explain the report with me?
