What to expect from fracture casting for a scaphoid fracture

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone near the base of the thumb. A cast may include the thumb to reduce movement at the fracture. Some scaphoid breaks are not obvious on an early image, so the clinician may arrange repeat examination or imaging when symptoms and the first assessment do not match.

The cast protects the bone while healing is assessed. Tenderness can improve before the bone is ready for force, so feeling better is not a reason to remove protection or resume loading without advice.

Keep the cast dry, avoid gripping, lifting and pushing with the injured hand, and do not use it to steady yourself. Move uncovered fingers gently if instructed, and elevate the hand when swelling bothers you. Do not alter the cast or place anything beneath it.

Attend each review. Your clinician may adjust protection, request imaging or prescribe hand and wrist rehabilitation after the cast is removed. Return to driving, work or sport only when you have been given clear guidance.

Seek prompt advice for worsening pain, a loose, wet or damaged cast, new numbness or tingling, cold or discoloured fingers, or inability to move the fingers. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe pain with rapidly increasing swelling or circulation changes.

Ask whether the thumb must remain covered, how much hand use is safe, when repeat imaging is planned, and which signs show that the cast needs an earlier review.
